SMS 2003 and Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates (ITMU)

Both System Management Server (SMS) 2003 and ITMU are obsolete products.  It was once running based on the residual patches in the workstations.  Now to make it working again.

Documentation is scarce, links on Microsoft website asks you to upgrade to System Centre Configuration Manager (SCCM).  For the ITMU to work, there are three basic steps. Download the latest catalog from Microsoft, scan the clients with the catalog, deploy the updates.

The “Microsoft Updates Tool Scan” Wizard will or should send the WSUScan catalog to the clients. The scan or inventory is completed and the results stored on the client in /system32/ccm/logs/ScanWrapper.log

When the advertisement for the “Distribute Software Updates” is due, a comparison will be made on the client on what to be installed. The differences will be installed. The log can be seen in PatchInstall.log

My problem is that the inventory is being successfully completed and the updates are arriving at the client and but not installed.

For some reason the latest catalog file is not going out. The scan was made based on the catalog file in Dec 09. So in the eyes ITMU, everything is fine and dandy. Except it is not and auditors is breathing heavily.
